Historical legends. From rows to comics frames
– Legends have accompanied the history of the World, from the appearance of written history to the present! What would remain of the writings of ancient or medieval historians if we removed the legends?
Romulus and Remus, the Holy Grail, the Knights Templar…
– The legend of the foundation accompanies the identity of any historical settlement and any country with a centuries-old history has its beginnings described in legends.
Negru Vodă, Dragos, Hunor and Magor, Hermann, Bucur, King Solomon, King Arthur…
– The importance of leaders in the history of a nation is given more by the collection of legends created about them than by history books. The nation’s pantheon was built and reinforced with legends. Historical education begins for schoolchildren with the legends in history textbooks. But, in the service of propaganda, too many times, “Historical legends” have turned the vanquished into victors, the enemies into friends, the thirst for power became bravery, the greed into love of estate…

– Sources of inspiration for original historical comics can also be folk legends and even urban or touristic legends.
What should you do?
1. To create a comic strip, having as its theme a historical legend, of minimum 2 – maximum 8 pages.
2. To send it scanned at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, by July 26, 2024 to the address salonbdbrasov@gmail.com, together with the contact details.
3. Papers can be in English, French or Romanian.
What next?
1. A jury consisting of 3 specialists (artists, historians, screenwriters) will judge the works between July 27 and 31, 2024 and will select the works that will be exhibited, those that will be published in the catalog and will designate the 6 winners.
2. We will announce the winners on August 1, 2024.
What are the prizes/benefits?
1. The 6 winners will be invited to participate in the festival between August 15-18, 2024, with all expenses borne by the organizer and will receive a prize worth 1500 lei/gross each.
2. The selected artists will have their works presented in the festival exhibition.
3. Selected artists will have their works published in the festival catalog.

The application must be sent exclusively in electronic format to salonbdbrasov@gmail.com by July 26, 2024 (inclusive) and consists of:
– The work, having a subject inspired by the theme “Historical legends”, will have A3 format – (copy) page/s, resolution of at least 300 dpi. The chosen subject can be addressed in a work containing two to eight pages;
– The source of documentation for the work must be mentioned by the author in a mandatory manner and is taken into account in the selection criterion of the quality of the scenario;
– Additional information in which to specify whether or not the work has been published before or if it is part of a previously published work/currently being published;
– Short professional biography (studies, exhibitions, links to/images for own works, etc.)
The selection criteria for the designation of the 6 winners:
1. the quality of the graphics (chosen graphic style, execution, originality);
– pencil drawing (classic or digital);
– contour / touch (classic or digital);
– color (classic or digital).
2. the quality of the script (the best adaptation of the historical subject);
3. the quality of the comic – the final work (graphics, composition, script).
By participating in the selection, the authors agree that the works sent in electronic format can be used as images in the communication of the Festival. The submission of the work represents everyone’s acceptance of the visual use of the images of their own work by the International Festival of Historical Comics Brașov, with the mention of the author and the title.
The selection decision of the organizers is final.
About the festival:
The Brașov International Historical Comics Festival, produced by the Brașov County History Museum, managed to become the most important event dedicated to historical comics in Romania, through the results obtained: 26 exhibitions of comics produced, which were toured in 14 cities from Romania, the first comic book museum exhibition organized in Romania (it was dedicated to the master Puiu Manu), the exhibition dedicated to the Gopo Centenary, 6 comic book catalogs, 170 new historical comic book works, made for the festival, 77 participating artists.
The Brașov County History Museum coordinated the only European project dedicated to historical comics, financed by the Creative Europe program in the period 2021-2023, and created the most important exhibition dedicated to comics from the Balkans, presented at the Brussels Comics Museum, the National History Museum of Albania – Tirana, the National Library of Romania, the Leskovac Cultural Center, the Veles Art Salon, the Exhibition Center of the Union of Bulgarian Artists – Sofia.
The festival team coordinated the publication of the album “Histories from 89 in comics” (2019), the largest collective album of comics in Romania, in which 39 authors participated, and the graphic novel 15 November 1987 (2022), by Alexandra Gold, editorial productions of the Brașov County History Museum.
